Itinerary of Charles Darwin
This is the most complete itinerary of Darwin's whereabouts during his lifetime. It was begun by Darwin scholar R. B. Freeman in his 1978 book Charles Darwin: A companion. (Text), revised in the 2007 online edition (Text) and very heavily expanded in Darwin: A Companion (2021). It is here further revised. Any errors or further suggestions can be sent to John van Wyhe.
Where Darwin was at any one time in his life is usually well documented except for the earliest years. For these the autobiographical fragment (CUL-DAR91.56-63), printed in ML1:1-5, CCD2, Appendix III, Secord, Evolutionary writings, 2008 and in Darwin Online, is the most helpful; this was written in 1838 when he started his personal 'Journal' (CUL-DAR158). The 'Journal' is reproduced year-by-year in the appendices to the Correspondence (CCD) interleaved with additional information by the editors. The complete 'Journal', transcribed by the editors of the Correspondence, later revised and edited by John van Wyhe, is in Darwin Online: (CUL-DAR158).
The 'Journal' contains only a little on the Beagle voyage, but the Beagle diary and FitzRoy's vol. 2 of the Narrative give details. There is a complete day-by-day account by Kees Rookmaaker: 'Darwin's itinerary on the voyage of the Beagle' in Darwin Online: (here).
After 1838, all important visits from home are noticed in his 'Journal', except that some brief trips to London for a night or so were omitted, or else he does not say where he stayed. Very many dates and details have been found by the editors of the Correspondence and by Christine Chua in Emma Darwin's diary. (CUL-DAR242) A source not previously available to scholars are the record books at Christ's College, Cambridge, first published, in Darwin Online, in 2009 here. Another new source of information are the newspaper accounts of Darwin serving as a magistrate or Justice of the Peace, given fully in Charles Darwin Justice of the Peace: the complete records (1857-1882), 2021 (here) and a few other isolated sources.
1842-1881 After his move to Down House in 1842 Darwin was away from home for a considerable part of each year. Much of the time was spent at hydropathic establishments, but there were also holidays and journeys for scientific business. From 1842 to 1881 he was away for a total of about 2,000 days, exceeding 50 days in 23 of these 40 years.
