Photograph of Charles Darwin in 1857 by Maull & Polyblank, a few years before he published the Origin of species. He grew his famous beard in 1862.
As revealed in John van Wyhe's iconography of Darwin (the only resource on portraits of Darwin), this photograph was not taken by "Maull & Fox" as usually stated. Their partnership was between 1879 and 1885.
